Can anyone tell me, do I need to use a particular type of thread or technique when sewing these on if I want to prevent them flopping downwards iykwim.

You can get button thread for buttons with a shank (or any buttons). You will need to look at how deep the shank is and match this to your fabric. So if you are making a coat, you may want deep shanks, but a blouse would only need shallow ones. This will prevent it flopping.

With shank buttons I also wrap the thread tightly around the stitches made to attach the shank to the fabric. If you use button thread it helps to stop the buttons flopping. After wrapping the thread I push the needle to the back and make a couple of small stitches to anchor it.
