Button craft - please advise a complete beginner

I have been admiring button pictures and would like to make a couple for my 2 dds. I had hoped to stick rather than sew the buttons - is this ok? How about the backing? I have some canvases ............... Should I cover them with fabric? Do the button-sticking first on the fabric and then cover the canvas?

A very simple method is a glue gun on stiff card and then frame it with Ikea frame. Draw outline of initial or number with faint pencil and start at edges, then fill in
