Recommendations for overlocker thread, please!

Erm, I've accidentally knowingly and deliberately bought one of the Singer overlockers that Lidl have on special offer this week.

I'm excited at the prospect of whizzing up t-shirts etc, but am a complete overlocker novice and realise I have no idea where to buy the thread, which is best and also cheapest. Had a quick squint at EBay and Guterman thread, which lots of people seem to rate, seems pricey to me.

Can anyone pass on their overlocking wisdom, tips, tricks etc?

I just use the bog standard 1000m spools of polyester thread, I mostly buy mine in bulk so its much cheaper ( trade) but if you've a cheap haberdashers near you you will find the same sort if thing there - no real special thread needed, this is the same stuff I use on my sewing machines too

Thinking about asking for an overlocker for christmas but I want one now.

I just buy the standard large cones with 5000m on them. They are mostly from eBay.

If you're new to overlockers I can recommend the Singer Guide to Sergers. I got mine through amazon and its been pretty useful. I learnt more about setting tension using that than I ever did from the manual. Also when practising try using different colours in each needle and looper. It really helps you to see what each thread does and how the tension works. At least it worked for me!

Also if you are playing around with the tension take a note of each setting on each dial before you change anything. I never remember and it can take ages sometimes to get the thing straight again!
