Where do you get your free knitting patterns?

I'm really lucky in that mil and dm are good knitters. However we have very different tastes and I'd love to direct them towards things I like. I like funky, bright modern patterns. Not old fashioned.

I have no idea where to start. Mr Google has helped but now just confused .

Pinterest. Loads of ideas and often free patterns.

Ravelry.com has loads. You need to sign up for an account but its free.

Every knitting pattern ever is indexed on Ravelry - many are available to buy through the site. Knitty.com has many, many free patterns (all of which are listed on Rav).

Look at the Drops yarn website.

Btw this is one I sent on to my Mum recently - she loves it, my step-dad hates it because it looks like it's buttoned up wrong :)

Your mum/MIL may not like these as they are all seamless patterns, that is you knit it in one go (and then do the sleeves in, rather than back and front and sleeves separate and sewn together). However, it just means you have to knit on a circular needle (two points with a cable joining them together instead of two long sticks).

You should look at paid for patterns too (like the ones in previous post), it's another few quid but you don't have to go out and buy huge books just for one pattern.

Oh doh - I'd forgotten that the OP had originally requested free patterns :) Yes, I buy patterns online all the time quite often and they are usually between about 3 and 5 quid. Supporting our fantastic local designers like Kate Davies is extremely worthwhile :) Bláithín (junior) is super-cute, as is Mini Manu.
