Is anyone else doing this?

I have made two little smoothie hats last night. One is red and one is blue and green stripes. I found the hardest thing was making the pom-poms small enough!
They took less than half an hour each to make which is fab for me as I like a quick project!
It is for such a good cause as well, keeping the elderly warm in the winter.
Share your smoothie hat stories here, I am going to make more today! Grin

Dd made one last year. Glad to hear it's come round again - we'll get the needles back out!

Purlesque · 13/10/2013 07:06

I have a couple of patterns for the hat but I don't like them, very fiddly.
I may just make up my own, can you do that? Where do you send them?

Ladyface · 13/10/2013 11:37

thebigknit.co.uk/

moondog · 13/10/2013 11:40

What on earth is the point of this?

Flibbertyjibbet · 13/10/2013 11:44

I can't see the point of it either. I knit a LOT. But why should I knit for free, and provide the maerials for free, to help some profit-making company with their sales campaign? Because thats what it is. I know they will donate 25p for each hat to charity.

But thats like saying all your efforts are only worth 25p. I'd rather give the money direct to a charity thanks.

And how are they going to work this? The thought of something made from unknown fibres, from an unknown home, being put with foodstuffs? Eeek no its bringing me out all ocd.

Dutchoma · 13/10/2013 13:12

It does sound a bit OCD, Flibberty.
The hats are put on the smoothie bottles, have you not seen them in previous years? They're not really 'mixed with foodstuffs' And Innocent are not 'promoting their business' with the hats, they are promoting a charity (AgeUK) with their winter campaign.
And 'using your time and your materials'? It doesn't take long to make them, I agree that the pompoms are the most work, but they don't have to have a pompom. They take very little material and it all adds to a feeling of somebody giving pleasure to others with very little effort. I have not been able to take part for the past two years, have been on the receiving from AgeUK and I think the hats are fabulous.

MoaningMingeWhingesAgain · 13/10/2013 13:21

The fact it isn't a freepost address for sending them in pisses me off TBH.

Use my wool and my time to knit them - no problem. Got lots of wool, like knitting.

Spend my cash to post them in, given that the postage will be nearly as much as they raise for charity? A bit bonkers. Say I knit six - they would go as large letter. About a £1 to post, they will raise £1.50 for the charity. Not at all efficient. I'd be better to just give the £1 to Age UK.

Dutchoma · 13/10/2013 13:46

We handed them in at the local AgeUK office

tingle1 · 13/10/2013 17:35

They are owned by coca cola. need more be said?

Viviennemary · 13/10/2013 17:39

I saw an advert for this. But I had a clear out of wool weeks ago. I can't really see the point of them I'm afraid. Blankets would be a better idea.

SuperiorCat · 14/10/2013 17:29

I agree Viviennemary - knit blankets, or hats or gloves or shawls or anything that could be used to keep people warm and distribute them through AgeUk day centres / Night Shelters.

And YY Innocent have sold out to Coca Cola Sad

merlin · 14/10/2013 17:35

I'm not even a knitter but when I saw the ad my first thought was "Why not just knit a proper hat/blanket etc?" and donate directly to Age Concern or whoever!

Not put a silly one on a bloody bottle of juice!

Maybe I should take it up- anyone recommend how I start?!

PissesGlitter · 14/10/2013 17:38

That's a lovely idea Merlin

I can maybe crochet something (I'm not great but willing to attempt a blanket or hat)

SuperiorCat · 15/10/2013 10:38

Sorry Cardiff we've put a dampener on your thread.

CardiffUniversityNetballTeam · 15/10/2013 14:07

Haha!

Yes, you lot have rather pissed on my chips as they say.

I thought it was quite a nice thing, everyone else disagrees. Never mind, I shall post off my little hats and say no more about it. Wink
