I want to make a patchwork quilt for a baby boy and I love the easiness of charm packs but I can't seem to find any that are suitable. They all seem to be quite girly. Also any reccomendations for places to buy them? preferably online? Thank you!

omg. . .finding a pack you like is H A R D . . that the point you keep looking till you are taken with one, but i must say they are all over priced and the packs are usually.. . er squares,( some are strips).

search using the word blue , boys , or something more specific like cars, rockets, jungle.

Bear in mind a quilt needs finishing, not just starting, searching for the fabric is suppose to be the fun/easy part.

My advice about finishing is. . . consider the item will need a border. . .oh yes. This will prob NOT be made of squares, (unless you are in it for the pain!) i use white, m m m nice, now here's my top tip. start with white, like a baby sheet or a new sheet, (top tip for buying good new bed fabric at a good price,) Then look for two or three fabrics online or in a fabric store that you choose individually(way more fun). .you can buy quarter or half a meter. . .mmm you could then do some cutting and create your own "charming". . .personal mix. its not only money saving which rarely is the issue. . more about your enthusiasm for your item.

You don't need a border on a quilt.

You may need slightly more than one charm pack for a baby quilt. There is a great selection of charm packs in the Fat Quarter Shop. It is a US site, but you can get some inspiration and track down what you like in the UK.

Doughty's cars, boats, tractors, dinosaurs and farm animals

Never done mail order, but they have had a shop in Hereford since I was a little girl (dress fabric back then, dress fabric and quilting now)
