I'm trying to make winter hats. It's not going well Sad Wink

I made this lovely hat yesterday but it's come out miles too small for me or dd. I used Stylecraft special dk and the right sized hook.

What's going wrong?!

Looks like an American blog, so uses US terms for stitches, did you convert to UK stitches?

AmberGamble · 16/09/2013 19:44

Ooooh, no I didn't.
I do a dc as YO, hook through, YO, pull through, YO, pull through two YO pull through (stitch finished)

Is that right?

What a lovely hat!

AmberGamble · 16/09/2013 19:57

LOL! It is really pretty, just really small!

What you are describing sounds like a US DC.

The pattern calls for "worsted" weight which is more like Aran I think, and a 5mm hook. I'm not sure this would have made a whole lot of difference to the size though

dk is too thin for a worsted weight yarn. a us dc is a UK tr. you'll need a aran yarn

When it comes to hats it is all about the fit...pretty obvious. but this pattern looks like you should fit it to your head as you go and extend the first few rounds until you have it 3/4 of the right size and then do the fancy pattern bit.

this way you can use any wool you want and it should fit.

I suggest undoing your work back to the plain DC's (US) and do a few more rounds until it is the right size and then repeat the fancy bit.

I had miniature hat problems! I have a really big head but have even struggled with the dses hats!

I have learned to do as whatdoes says and do more rounds than suggested until I get the crown big enough.

It a lovely hat btw, hope you work out the pattern to fit.

Thanks all! I'll undo it to the circular section and expand it Thanks
