in fabric shops etc? Well,do you order the patterns from the shop or do they actually have them in stock somewhere?I always see the books but never the actual patterns.

patterns are usually in the chest-of-drawersy looking things under wherever the books are on display, but some might have to be ordered.

Am I allowed to go ferreting through the drawer thingies or do I have to fetch a shop lady?

probably not ferret as such, but unless there's a big thing saying 'ASK FOR ASSISTANCE', you can probably open the right drawer and extract the pattern you want - they're normally quite carefully indexed by code number.
