Crochet help (joining colours vertically)

Hello,

I'm very new to this so hope I've vaguely tried to describe what I'm trying to achieve in the title.

I started practicing the treble crochet stitch, and it looked ok, so I figured I'd just keep going and make something out of it. I now have a length of crochet about 1.5m long and 11 stitches wide.

The "plan" was to make a scarf. But I'd like to make it wider. I'd like to do some more stripes alongside the length I have already crocheted. But I have no idea how to do the join!? My book only shows horizontal stripes if you get me?

Hope I've described what I'm trying to do! I don't know the terminology, so I tried my best.

Ps. I know I did something a bit wrong at the end of each row, instead of going into the top of the chain stitch I went into the hole. It stil looks ok, I'm not that bothered, I kept doing it for consistency, but thought I'd mention it in case it affects how I do the joining.

Thanks very much for reading

I think that you will need to work a seperate piece and join it together at the sides.

You could add long vertical stripes to either/both side by crocheting into the row ends (as if you were edging a blanket) but I don't think you could extend the existing horizontal ones.
