7yo DS1 showing interest in the sewing machine. Ideas?

I had my sewing machine out for the first time in yonks last weekend and ds1 was fascinated. He's had a shot using paper and no thread and he is enjoying making pictures with the needle holes.

Are there any crafty things that I could suggest to him to see if he is really interested in the sewing, or if it's just that it's a machine and he wants a shot!

I am not very talented in the craft department, so nothing too fancy in case I need to help him!! Grin

Bean bags, cut two squares/rectangles, sew 3 sides together, stuff and sew the 4th side. or stuff them with lavender to make a nice scented thing to go under his pillow. you could also try sewing patterns on them once he' got the basics.

I've been teaching DD to make scrunchies (hand sewing though as shes 4) but thats probably a bit boring for a 7o boy unless he likes making people gifts.

If he likes "drawing" with it you could always thread it and drop the feed dogs (I think that's what they're called?) and let him do some free hand embroidery on some material. I think you need a darning hook but its super easy and fun Smile

Ah, you've lost me on the technical stuff there!! What does drop the feed dogs mean? Sorry, I am a bit clueless!

They're the little teeth things that help the fabric go through the machine. You can usually lower them if you open the front where the bobbin is Smile

Oh, ok, I'll have a look. The machine is very basic. My mum got it after she got married, so it's coming up for 50yrs old!!
