I'm stuck! Knitting an elephant.

I'm knitting the elephant from knitted wild animals.
I'm doing the head which is knitted in one piece.
I have increased to make 72 sts, I then have to work 15 rows in stocking stitch, then I have to decrease, this will give me 64 sts after first dec row. The next row says p50, turn.
I don't know how to do this, I will have 64 sts left so why only p50? How do I turn? What happens to the other sts.
TIA :)

Perhaps is this "short row shaping"? :-)

Purlesque · 19/08/2013 18:12

I have no idea. But what happens to the sts left over?

Sounds like short rows.
Leave them on the needle, if you read further along you'll knit them in further along the pattern.

Do I have to wrap the yarn first?

Ah yes I've had that with a pattern. It's a bit odd the first time. Just leave the stitches on the needle. Read down the pattern there will be more info on them.

I've made the panda from that book & it's fantastic! Looks pretty much like the pic. Other than the face, they always turnout individually I find.

Purlesque · 20/08/2013 09:31

Milktray did you have to wrap the yarn when you turned or did you just turn?

Got it!

It is a great book, I have knitted the monkey 3 times for friends babies! The giraffe is a great one to make too. Her other book based on farm animals is good as well.

Purlesque · 21/08/2013 06:03

Yes I saw another one, I may get it if this turns out well.
I'm a bit nervous about piecing it all together as I'm the worst at sewing.

It will be fine. Post a picture when it is finished!

Purlesque · 22/08/2013 05:44

Yes I'll try and remember. I have a week to finish it, fingers crossed!

I've done the knitting, which was diddly, now I've seen most of it together apart from the fore and hind legs. But where the cast on edge rolls out it looks awful when sewn. The ears look shit too.
There is no way I can give this as a gift.
There is so much sewing in this pattern I have just decided to not bother the rest.
So disappointed, it's nowhere near as neat as the pictures I've seen.
I'm quite upset because it was for my gran, she loves elephants and loves to be made things.

I think there is not enough help in this book with the sewing for the amount of sewing that has to be done!

Would using mattress stitch give you neater seams. It is basically weaving the seams together using the bumps from the ends of the rows. I would try to roll the cast on and cast off edges under and into the seams. Grin

Purlesque · 27/08/2013 19:29

I used mattress stitch for most of it but there are certain bits that won't let you do that stitch.
Even my mattress stitch is a mess :(

Purlesque · 29/08/2013 07:32

I didn't see the point in not finishing it so I unpicked the bits I didn't like and tried another way, I spent to much time on it to just stop.
What I stitched looked marginally better, so I gave it to her and really liked it.
For a first attempt it was acceptable.
I won't be doing anymore of those though :)

Can I ask what the pattern book is called please Purlesque?

I'm also not so good at the finishing up... Blush

Hello I’m currently doing this pattern and I’m up to the part to knit the head of the elephant and it’s says (knit3 inc to end) can anyone help? I’ve currently got 24 stictches and once finished this row I should have 30 so I’m increasing by 6 but where!?

I’m thinking I knit 3 increase 1 knit 3 increase 1 and so on but that will give me more than 6 stitches increased?

I hope this makes sense!

BishopBrennansArse · 18/01/2018 23:03

Its knit 3 stitches, increase
Repeat the above to the end.

There's your 6 stitch increase.

Hope that makes sense?

pidgepodge · 19/01/2018 07:43

Now I’ve slept I think I understand it! Thankyou!
