tapestry wool knitting/crochet equivalent - help needed!

I have a stack of leftover skeins of DMC tapestry wool from various projects and have started using it up crocheting granny squares for an afghan. They look great; quite dense, on a 3mm hook. I'm going to need lots more though and I was wondering what the equivalent weight of 'regular' wool would be, as it would be far more economical to buy in larger quantities. Does anyone know? On one website I've seen DMC tapestry wool described as 4-ply - would that be just the same as 4-ply knitting wool?

Thanks for any advice.
