So, what do you do when a pattern 'beats' you?

As the one I'm trying to do now is about to go flying across the room again!

You ask for help? You show other people the pattern, and discuss how it's going wrong?

AnyaKnowIt · 04/08/2013 19:52

Don't know anyone who crochets, even the woman in the yarn shop is more of a knitter

AnotherWorld · 04/08/2013 19:58

There are many hookers here Anya

puddleofpiddle · 04/08/2013 19:59

I'm a crocheter, what are you working on?

AnyaKnowIt · 04/08/2013 20:06

www.deramores.com/crochet-tunic-and-shrug-in-deramores-baby-dk-1010-digital-version

This is what I'm working on. But the flowers aren't coming out as flowers

hmm, it looks like cluster stitches to make the petals... I've worked them twice before on shawls I think, are you on ravelry? There might be a dishcloth pattern using the same stitch pattern that you can read through and work so you get a handle on the stitch.

AnyaKnowIt · 04/08/2013 20:55

Yes, its mainly 8tr tog, just tried looking on YouTube for a video but no joy.

Will check out ravelry thanks

I've had a quick look on ravelry but can't find what i'm talking about! Is it the stitch pattern or the increases/decreases you are having trouble with? Or something else?

Isabeller · 04/08/2013 20:58

That looks lovely. I would love to learn to read crochet patterns.

puddleofpiddle · 04/08/2013 21:03

pattern is on the ravelry database here: www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/crochet-tunic-and-shrug-in-deramores-baby-dk-1010 but there are no other projects as yet.
Deramores does have a group though, perhaps ask there for help? www.ravelry.com/groups/deramores

8 tr tog (assuming it's UK terms) should be [yarn over, through st and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops] 8 times, yarn over and draw through 9 remaining loops on hook

puddleofpiddle · 04/08/2013 21:16

If it's US terms then you need to yarn over twice at the start of each stitch - so it's {yarn over 2 times, through st and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops, yarn over and draw through 2 loops} 8 times, yarn over and draw through remaining loops...

AnyaKnowIt · 04/08/2013 21:24

Thank you will try and check out those links

Its UK pattern and the 8trtog is twice in bottom of chain 3, skip 3, 3 times in next stitch, SK (2ch, 1dc, 2ch), insert 3 tines in next stitch.

I keep trying, and keep trying, and swear a lot and put it away, then try again etc. I started the gloves Im working on around 10 times before I got the hang of the technique. They look great not they're nearly finished.

AnyaKnowIt · 04/08/2013 21:33

Oh yes the swearing Grin

I threw a strop yesterday about how it was all shit and went to bed. It was 9pm Blush

Is there a typo?! I'm just having a spur of the moment cal and the clusters are ginormous!! In the pattern notes does it say 8trtog as well? I'm squinting away at the pic but I'd wonder if it shouldn't be a 5trtog or even a 3trtog!
It looks like a top down construction to me, it there a 2 row pattern repeat for the petal section, so one row is spreading the three petals out and the next row gathers them together...

puddleofpiddle · 04/08/2013 21:35

btw it shouldn't affect your stitch count if you alter the amount of stitches you are working in the cluster :)

puddleofpiddle · 04/08/2013 21:54

I've found this on you tube, not watched it through but perhaps it means 8 single tr stitches into a single stitch rather than a cluster stitch? The other thing I think might be missing is a ch1 or ch2 (or even ch 3) between each petal to separate them out a bit...

Hope you figure it out!

AnyaKnowIt · 04/08/2013 22:03

nope, no typo as it continues in the pattern. There is a 5tr tog at the end of row,

But in the pattern notes its got frtr (front raised tr) but I can't see where in the pattern notes.

Another question, would you think that ch3, sk3, DC in next stitch wud just be a row of chain with a DC every 3 stitches?

Might send deramores an email in morning

That video looks promising Flowers

OP posts:
puddleofpiddle · 04/08/2013 22:13

I'd email deramores or start a thread on their ravelry group, the pattern for me just gives a bit of a lumpy mess! Is it charted? I usually find a chart makes a whole lot more sense than complex written instructions! I think I get what you are asking re the ch3, sk 3, dc - i.e. it's essentially a chain of 7 with the central stitch anchoring in in the middle - however when I first read it my brain automatically put it into US terms so the chain remains horizontal to your work. In UK terms it would mean the chain dips to join the row below... I do hope I'm not confusing you further! Can I ask, are you seeing the petal shape at all or is it all mushed together? I'd be inclined to swatch separately using 3trtog and then 5trtog with ch sts in between and see if it looks more floral!

AnyaKnowIt · 04/08/2013 22:19

Ah see what you mean about the chain, am just seeing a mess, couldn't see petals at all. Will do a swatch tomorrow and get on raverly when I get hod of laptop.

Thank you for your help

If you really can't get your head round it, it might be worth ditching the pattern and starting again... I made the for my dd when she was one and she wore it as a tunic as she grew - it lasted her four years! Pattern is for 4 ply but other projects have been made in dk :) www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/cocos-bobble-dress

puddleofpiddle · 04/08/2013 22:23

raised front treble is on the sleeves of teh shrug, can't see it at all on the dress..

AnyaKnowIt · 04/08/2013 22:29

I love that dress, might be exchanging my yarn tomorrow
