Which sewing machine do I want?

I haven't used a sewing machine for years so I really can't remember how they work and so I think I need a beginner's model. I don't want to do anything complicated with it (at least to start with). Any recommendations? What kind of features should I be looking for?

Ideally, IIWY, I would find an independent sewing machine shop and see if they have a second hand Janome or Husqavarna (sp!)
