Advice for painting terracotta flower pots please!

For some bizarre reason I've come up with the idea of DS painting some flower pots for his pre school teachers for the end of year gifts.. It's 2 days until his last day, and the pots arrived today. I assumed I could just paint them with normal kids paint, but i've been looking online and apparently I need acrylic and all sorts of sprays etc. Has anyone ever done it without all of that? I'm happy to buy acrylic paint but don't want to spend masses on anything extra.

Why I always leave it til the last minute is beyond me. We've got 6 to do, but luckily i mis judged the size online and they're tiny!

We painted then with normal kids paint then painted over the top with pva glue. They seem fine. When it gets warm the glue showed through the first couple of times but are fine now.
