Knitting pattern - relative beginner HELP

Hi,

Just trying to work this out.

1st and alt rows: (WS). Knit.
2nd row: K1. yfwd. K12 (16-20). yfwd. K1. yfwd. K12 (16-20). yfwd. K1. 31 (39-47) sts.

The highlighted bits....I've cast on 43 stitches, but this makes (following the larger size) 90 stitches?

Am I not understanding correctly (I am quite new to patterns and terminology)

Also, with the yarn forward instruction - do I pull the yarn forward for every stitch? (that's what I was doing)

You only yfwd 4 times across the row. Once after the first stitch, then you knit 20, then yfwd again, knit 1, yfwd again, knit 20, yfwd again and finally knit 1. You will have 4 holes across the row. (One after the first stitch, one either side of the k1 in the middle of the row and one before the last stitch). This makes 47 stitches.

ah so the end part is "you will have 47 stitches" and not "knit a further 47 stitches"

The K12(16-20) refers to the size of the garment so the smallest size you would knit 12 stitches, medium size knit 16 stitches, largest size knit 20 stitches.

When you complete the row, you should have 31/39 or 47 stitches respectively.

So your size pattern

Cast on 43 stitches

Knit 1, yfwd, then knit 20 (22 stitches on right hand needle)
yfwd, knit1, yfwd, knit 20 (45 stitches on right hand needle)
yfwd, Knit 1 (47 stitches on right hand needle)

It was with a hat question wasn't it? Well crack on with this and get started on some winter hats for him! I still make hats for my DS at 6 as he has a bigger than average head. (95th centile at birth - that nipped a bit on the way out )

It was the hat - his head was too big for it too, also on 95th centile!

This is a pattern for booties, for winter - he has huge feet so am doing the 12 month pattern (he will be 7/8 months at the start of winter).

Then there's another hat pattern I plan to do. Hopefully I will then be more used to pattern terminology and can give a little (or huge) cardi a try.

glad to be of help. I have just recently rediscovered knitting too. I am on my second aran. DD wants a big aran cardigan for going to uni this autumn (freezing cold Scottish uni).

I had to ask for help from my elderly mother because I managed to knit half of the back with a mistake in every row! Now that was heartbreaking when I had to rip it down and I did feel when the very obvious mistake was pointed out to me.

I wish I'd asked mumsnet...that fount of all knowledge!

Ouch, there was me feeling irked that I had to unravel a very badly knitted 2 rows

I find Youtube a great source for help too - sometimes I need to 'see' how to do something rather than read instructions (other times reading is good enough - weird!)
