Joining squares for a granny blanket

I've been busy making squares in a mix of knitting techniques and crochet. I want to start joining some of the squares now to see it take shape. However I would really like to have a crochet border between each square of a few rows, to give a nice contrast. All I can find online is how to discreetly join squares by crochet but there must be a way to actually make a crochet or knitted border between each square. Any ideas, anyone?

What about doing a DC or a treble between them? Would you have to crochet a border around the sides of the knitted ones to make the sides consistently straight first? I'm a beginner so I am interested I how you get on with this.

I would crochet a border around each square and join these as you go. The overall effect would be of a contrast strip between each square.

Another way would be to crochet a few rows onto your first square, then join onto your second square and finish off. Then start again on the opposite side of the second square and repeat to join a third, fourth, fifth etc square to join in strips. Once you have all your squares joined in strips then you crochet along the length of one strip and join in your second strip. Finish off and start again on the opposite side of the second strip to join in the third strip etc. This seems very complicated compared to the first method.

The final version would be to knit/crochet borders separately and sew them on. This would be the most complicated method and would have me scrunching the whole lot up and throwing it in a corner

I think I'm going to try crocheting a border round each square then just stitching them together. If I can work out how to do that! I'm new to crochet and can manage a granny square comfortably now but not much else! Will try crocheting a border round a knitted square too.

I used to sew everything together and hated making squares until I used the Attic24 method of hooking them together. I am now a total convert.
Tutorial here I have just made the summer garden throw and that was hooking together 100 squares - just 6 months ago I wouldn't even have contemplated it.

So, I could crochet an extra round on my crocheted squares to join them together, right? But could I also crochet trebles round my knitted squares? I guess I could but need reassurance here!

Well, I've made some progress and am delighted with my efforts so far. I've used the same colour to border some crochet squares with more trebles. It takes 7 trebles to fill a side so I've done the same on just 1 knitted square too, trying to space the trebles out evenly along the side of the knitted square. I've also crocheted some of these squares together and it is looking great! Tomorrow I will try and post a pic somehow but although I can see this is not going to be a speedy process I'm so proud of it so far!

Update, if anyone is interested... I've now bordered and joined 9 squares. 5 were crocheted and 4 knitted. I'm very pleased with how it is turning out but getting it to anything like blanket size will take some time! I figure I need it to be 9 x 9 squares. I've put a pic on my profile if anyone wants to see.

I just plod on with plain squares which I send to pistey to hook together and edge. I'd love to be able to do a whole blanket myself.
