Sewing machines - what would you recommend?

I haven't used a sewing machine before, but would like to start trying to make a few bits and bobs. I'm on a budget, so wondered what people would suggest. What can I get for about £50 - it doesn't have to be all-singing-all-dancing, just capable of the basics.

I would get one that is second hand - and regularly serviced. Try your local sewing shops/craft place. They sometimes have adverts as they start out on a 'basic' machine and when/if they get good or want to do more they upgrade.

Yes you'll def get a better second hand one for £50 than new. Have you had a look at classified ads elsewhere? Gumtree or a local facebook page. You'll soon realise what it is that you want from a machine dpending on what it is you're making. Good luck!
