Sewing machine playing up...help..!

sorry if typing bad, balancing heavy baby in arms at same time1
tried to use sewing machine earlier for 1st time in months. it won't stitch properly...i have it set to do ////// but instead it is doing

[pathetic pride at ability to mimic sewing with keyboard!!]
can anyone tell me what i need to do...????

how many options are on the machine for stitches? is it a basic 5 model one or are there loads, or is it stuck on button hole??
i'd try the straight stitch and if it aint working then there maybe sonething up with the selector knob? if its a knob? is it a computersed one?

computerised! ho ho ho! Is about 15 yrs old I think...
can't do buttonholes on this model so it's not that.
There is a slidey bit which moves from straight stitches to little zig zags all the way up to tall ziz zags. There is a dial for stitch length (0 to 5). and a tension dial 0-9.
Just tried doing straight stitches and ended up with _ _ _

like the bottom thread keeps 'missing' the top one....

jessa its the tension , on the bobbin case, sorry ofr slow response, theres a tiny screw on it and it may need tightening, you'll have to experiemtn and it might onyl be a tiny twist.
