Crafty question! Backing for letters

I've been cutting out letters out of cardboard packaging for ds (2) to play with, and used them for the first time this week, he loved them but they are not as sturdy as I wish, and a real pain to pick up, so I thought I could put a magnetic backing on them, does anyone know if magnetic tape would be the best thing to use? Or what could I use as backing?

I personally wouldn't use magnetic tape as it might become unstuck and swallowed! How about cutting out the shape twice and gluing together ? You could use some thickish bits of wool or string (or several strands at once) and thread Them onto a large eyed needle. Sew through the card- you might need to make the hole first with scissors- and out the to again, about a centimetre from the first hole. Knot together and make a tassle so you can pick them up easily

Thanks Pudden, not worried about things being swallowed anymore, so that wouldn't be an issue. They are printed letters, so just a square cut out of brand names and the like, and some of them quite small.
What about magnetic paper? Then covered in plastic all around?

Why not laminate them?
