Good base fabric for appliqué/ embroidery?

I'm thinking of doing some collage/ embroidery fabric art. A sort of mix of appliqué felt pieces and embroidered details iyswim.
What would be a good base fabric to do it on?

I'm thinking maybe some sort of cotton or linen or canvas maybe. Nothing too thin and stretchy as I'll probably use an embroidery hoop, but not too thick either

Please advise me! :)

Calico, and you can get it in different weights.

Thanks!

Do you have an online shop you'd recommend? :)

I haven't bought fabric online for ages.

I have a local fabric shop plus Ikea (calico is quite cheap there) and Aberkhan Fabric (who also sell online).

In another Arts and Crafts thread someone posted a list of online fabric shops via sewing directory.com.
