How to sew up a knitted bag made with can can yarn?

I have just taught myself to knit using can can yarn [stupid emotion] and now have the components ready for a ruffle bag. Do I have to sew this up using yarn as I don't have a needle big enough? Could I use ordinary thread? The bag will be lined so that will take the strain of all the crap I will inevitably fill it with! The knitted outer is for show rather than functionality.

I would suggest investing in a wool needle or bodkin (great word ). They are not very expensive actually.

It looks like an ordinary sewing needle, but has a bigger eye and is quite blunt. Yarn shops and haberdashers sell them and they are usually stocked with the bits and bobs like stitch holders, cable needles and row counters (and other assorted stuff that as a crafter you now can't function without)

I would say you would need one, if only to darn in the ends of the Can-Can. Then sew up the rest of the bag with smooth yarn rather than thread, again using the bodkin.

Thank you. Thought that might be the answer but am impatient and was hoping I could run it up on the machine! Oh well off to the shops it is.

You will struggle to sew it up with CanCan yarn as it is so wide when it is open and so dense when it is folded (ie, as it arrives on the ball) and you might struggle to get it through a bodkin. When I made a bag with it, I crocheted it in the round to get away without having to sew it. I think I would consider treating the finished knitting as a piece of fabric and use a wide zigzag stitch to machine it together.

Thanks for the reply Latte. My bag is very similar to yours though knitted as two pieces. I went to a local independent wool shop today and they advised using extra strong thread rather than wool. I think I'll have a go on my machine as I can always unpick it if it doesn't work. Thanks for the link I will use this to help me make the lining.
