knitting - what does this mean?

Doing sleeves for my jumper and it says
'inc 1 st at each end of 9th and every foll 8th row'.

2 things, how do I increase at the ends? Does it mean pick a stitch up between the first/last 2 stitches?
And what does foll mean?

Yes, you increase by picking up a stitch between the first two/ last two stitches. Foll = following .

At the top of the pattern it usually says what increase stitch to use. Can you post what it says? Foll means following. So, on row 9 you increase at the beginning and end of the row. Then do the same on row 17, 25, 33 and so on.

It doesnt say anything about increasing at top of pattern, doesn't say which to use. Though it does have the abbreviations, doh!
Can you tell its my first jumper?! It's all st st so been straight forward so far.

The ones for increases are about halfway down the page. Have a go at either "Make 1 right" or "Make 1 left", and see which one you are comfortable with and looks best on a swatch. On your sleeve, work the increase you prefer between the first/last two stitches as YoothaJoist said.

It doesn't matter which one you use, as long as you are consistent. Some patterns will specify in the abbreviations at the top - ie M1 is always M1l, or a backwards loop and so on.

When it is increasing at each end of a row, I usually knit front and back. I only use a M1 (in english patterns) if they specify.

So your pattern - row 9 - kfb, knit across, kfb
row 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, knit or purl as usual
row 17 - increases at each end as row 9
row 25 will be a row with increases too.
