Knitting or crochet?

I'm a complete beginner but would like a project for the evening and fancied making woollen squares that I can then stitch together to make a blanket.

I'd like for some of the squares to have patterns (nothing too ambitious, maybe stripes!)

But I don't know whether to knit or crochet (or both???)

Which is easier to learn?

I can do both and find crochet MUCH easier (only one hook to contend with and less catastrophic if you make a mistake). MIL is the other way round, loves knitting, hates crochet.

Really you need to try both and see which suits you. This blog is a mecca for crochet inspiration attic 24 - have a look at the side for crochet. Her tutorials are excellent. Actually googling Attic 24 and going to images is good too.
Ravelry is excellent for free patterns for both knitting and crochet.

I love crochet and if you want to make squares they are so easy to do in crochet and there's lots of different patterns, l

Oops, bloody phone! Look up granny squares, great for a beginner :)
