Latch hooking - advice needed!

I'm about 1/6 of the way into my very first latch hooking project & absolutely loving it! It's a very small rug but it got me thinking - I'd really like a big (90x120cm) rug for the living room but haven't been able to find anything I like. I have a simple 3x4 squares pattern in mind, so nothing overly complex. Has anyone attempted making something that size? Would it be particularly difficult to do? I'm doing my current project on my lap comfortably but I imagine it would be more tricky with a larger rug. I've read that it would be possible to do each square separately & latch hook them together. Would this create uneven-ness on the bottom? Would it be logical to attach some thick fabric like hessian to the base?

Anyone with more experience have any advice for me?
