I have finally found a beginners crochet pattern I actually understand!

Baby beanie pattern . Honestly, I have been struggling as although I knit, crochet patterns just seem to be an entirely new language and even ones marked easy or beginners completely confuse me. This one has pictures too, so I was able to count their stitches and compare to mine and see where I had gone wrong. Just thought I would post in case anyone else trying to learn.

It looks great. I think I might just have a go. Half way through a blanket but waiting for more wool to arrive. To make it bigger than the pattern I suppose I'd just make a bigger flat round bit before shaping?

Belinda, yes add an extra Increase round. Measure the person's head then make a circle 1/2" or so smaller, then work straight rows till it's long enough.

Thanks for posting this. It's the first pattern I've followed and took me a couple of evenings. I followed the exact size in the end, just to see how it turned out. It's far from perfect but I've learned a lot just from this one piece. I used the wrong size hook for the wool I had (I think - used 4-ply with a 4mm hook) so I'm going to try again with different sizes/ wool. Also, I had some trouble working out which was the last stitch in the previous round sometimes, and so have accidentally increased in places, making it a bit of an odd shape.

So, I'll see how I get on tonight with another one. DS quite happy with his wonky one though! Teeny tiny newborn niece will need hers much smaller.

Thanks! I was the same - my first was really wonky but for my 2nd attempt I counted the stitches from her pictures and made sure mine matched and also used a stitch marker which really seemed to help. Finished article looks almost like hers!

I used a similar pattern to make the hat on my profile :)

I need to join a new ball of wool. I'm just about to begin row 14 (chain 2 then turn the work). How do I finish off and join? It's just because I've run out - am taking down the previous hat in order to use the wool for this one. Hat is much better generally - looks very neat! But probably too small...

At the end of the round, when you slip stitch, put the hook through the stitch then instead of yarn over, pick up from the new ball. Tie the pesky ends together and carry on as normal. You can crochet over the pesky ends to avoid sewing them in, too.

Also works for colour changes :o
