I hope someone good at crafts an help with ideas! I have bought this stocking for my son, and I would like to personalise it with his name. Any ideas for how to get it on there? Shall I stitch it somehow, or is there an easier way?

Hobbycraft sell 3d fabric paint by dylon, its quite easy to use, or, write the name in erasable pen then stitch over it

I would draw the name on as yule suggests, then chain stitch over it.

I'll try it. It will be the first thing I've ever stitched!

It will be fine. Chain stitch will give nice three dimensional definition to it. I did one for dd when she was little (a fleece one) and she still wants it out (and filled!) tho' she is now 15!

May I as a veteran of stockings make an ever so 'umble suggestion ?

Buy another one ....... Leave one on bed , have 2nd one stuffed ready .... Tiptoe into bedroom and swop .
Beats the hell out of tiptoeing in , getting stocking, stuffing sticking whist very tired and then going back into the room to replace .

Back to original question .... I would cut out letters and wonder web them on . Helps if child has short name !

If you're not too sure of your stitching skills, I would stitch the name onto another piece of fabric ~ small rectangle or something similar ~ (felt is very forgiving) and then stitch that onto the stocking when you're happy with it - that way if you muck up, you won't have ruined an expensive stocking.

You could make a luggage tag style to attach to it so that if it goes wrong or its not as you hoped you havent "ruined" the stocking.

like this

Sorry crossed posts! Grin

I did mine by cutting the letters out of white felt and then blanket stitching them on with red thread. But you could just as easily stick them on with wonder web or even glue.

I wrote names on our stockings with gold pen, still looks good a few years later.

Molehillmountain · 15/12/2012 15:55

As a further suggestion on how to fill stockings-ours get hung downstairs on the mantelpiece. Smile

I would use bondaweb! Not even sure I own a needle!

Thanks all! I'm liking the gold pen idea, stitching does seem a bit difficult...
