What yarn and how much? Want to make something like this...

I was in John Lewis yesterday and fell in love with this:

But I don't need a throw so big and I don't want to splash £80 on it either... so I've decided to crochet one. No idea what pattern yet, but size wise it will probably end up being 7ft by 1ft (just want a small throw to go over another one at the end of the bed).

Been looking online at possible yarns but I've never made anything using a chunky/super chunky yarn so no idea quantities etc.. Was looking at these three options:

10mm hook - 45m from 50g ball

The finished throw in JL was very soft and whisp-y so I'd like to recreate that effect. Do these look like they'd do the job??

How do I work out how much yarn I'll need? Help! Complete novice at anything other than a few granny squares! TIA :)

I'm terrible at working out how much yarn I'd need for a project.

The top link would probably need quite a lot. It's only 52m per 200g on a 15mm hook, so yardage is much less than the other two plus you'd use less stitches per row and less rows in the overall blanket (i.e. the pattern would be less repeats of a bigger stitch pattern iykwim - I know what I'm trying to say in my head)

Also all those links need to be washed at 30. I'd maybe be tempted to use Stylcraft Aran which can be washed at 40 and use two strands together to make it more chunky.

Thanks for help crafty - after three wasted trips to local yarn shops I went back to John Lewis and showed them the blanket and asked for a recommendation :) She suggested either Rowan Big Wool or Sirdar Big Softie and helpfully worked out number of balls of both which was ace.

Hi. Have you ever seen rowan big wool? I have some and have knitted with it. It's fab and great quality. However it's hand wash i think plus it's hairy like wool. It's not soft and fluffy. It's bordering on wiry in my opinion. Dunno what the sirdar one is but if your wanting soft and fluffy, i'd probably check that out first.

Just took a look at the link. It is now half price. Makes you wonder if you could make it yourself for that price. Possibly not.
