Hi folks, have been out and got myself some bits and am trying to teach myself crochet from a library book and a pamphlet.Am struggling a bit but have managed to do a link of chain stitch.I found a description of how to make a crochet flower in a mag and would love to do it.Surely it can't be too hard but I don't get how you get the petal shape and what does it mean when it says SEW a double into the first double, does that mean use cotton and stitch it on??Is this too much for me to make at the mo?Can I tell you what it says and can anyone advise me please-Bundle?are you there?

It says make a chain of 8 stitches, join up and add 10 doubles into the ring.Join the circle again and sew a double into the first double,a treble and a double treble.

Move to the next pair and take the needle through into a double treble,a treble and a double.Repeat around the centre until you have formed a 5 petal flower.Join the last stitch to the first and cast off knotting the ends tightly and trimming off any excess. For the circles make by carefully following the instructions as above in step 1 but without forming petels.

I can crochet (a little bit) but that sounds so confusing!
I taught myself to crochet online and I have made a baby hat, booties, cardigan and ponchos.

I'm sure someone will be along soon and be more helpful than me!

gosh that makes it sound complicated.
with the eight stitch chain - you just insert the hook into the first stitch you did (doesn't have to be too accurate) and then pull the yarn through this and the last stitch you made. this will give you a circle. then do double crochets -insert hook, draw yarn through - 2 stitches on needle, then draw yarn through these two, leaving you one on needle. this is a double. do this ten times into the hole created by your chain of 8 stitches (ie not into a stitch, but into the void!) - that's how most flowers/circular things start. tbh the next bit leaves me stumped..
would you like me to find you a flower of mine and photocopy it for you? mine deffo doesn't involve sewing, just doing increasing numbers of doubles/trebles etc to create each petal bit (it does get a bit crowded!), some on top, some underneath to create the petals.

sorry i'm not of much help!

I think i had to tinker around a bit with a flower, have definitely done one but had to undo a bit before i got there. will dig one out tonight..

there are a few websites that give you step by step instructions on different stitches. I bought a book from Ebay that gave you some easy designs to follow, not sure where it is now though!

Briliant Bundle thanks, thought it would be better to start off with something small like a flower.

Kid do you know which sites are the good sites. It might help me to have a few different explanations.I had to read quite a bit before I got the hang of chain stitch.

I'll keep looking for some more.

I thought I'd add my request for a hooded baby shawl. I intend to try and make one, they can't be that hard to crochet can they? Grin
