Help needed decreasing in fishermans rib!

I'm making a hat in fishermans rib (p1, knit next stitch below) following a basic stocking stitch hat pattern but substituting the rib pattern. The decrease is a fairly standard k8, k2tog to end, then k7, k2tog etc.

Normally I can do this in my sleep but I'm struggling so much keeping the rib pattern! No matter what I try it keeps slipping a stitch to the side as I can't tell which stitches should now be purled once the decreases begin.

Is there an easy way to work it out? I started with 90 stitches.

Ravelry seems to suggest knitting 3 st together instead of 2... Going to give it a try!
