If your pattern says "decrease 1st at each end of first and following fifth row", does it mean:

Row 1: Dec one st at each end
Row 2: k
Row 3: k
Row 4: k
Row 5: Dec one st at each end

Or should there be an extra k row in there?

I would do the next decrease on row 6, on the basis that row 1 is the following first row and so on. I've always done it like that and it seems to work!

if that is the only decreasing i don't think it will matter too much which you choose.
if it says at each end of 1st and every following 5th row i would be with Tatum

Ah thank you, have been doing it wrong then!

I agree with alison, it won't make a huge difference, but it will mean that you are always decreasing on knit rows if you are doing st st, rather than having to alternate between knit and purl :)
