The dullest question EVER asked on MN....

Right,I've got some old wooden pieces (bookshelves) that I want to paint.
What do I do first?
Sandpaper?
What about primer?
What kind of paint can I use?
One coat or two?

God,I've just bored the arse off myself....

sandpaper, primer if you want a good finish and gloss, matt or shiny :) 2 coats probably :)

To be fair, I believe someone was asking for advice about mops the other day. I don't think you can hope to compete :o

charliecat · 26/03/2006 22:23

if it has varnish on it you are gonna need a new pair of arms and a lot of willpower to get it off....i think previously, I have painted over the varnish with more...not a good look lol

charliecat · 26/03/2006 22:23

i answered the mop one tooBlush

Pixiefish · 26/03/2006 22:23

Depends on the finish quality you want. If you just put some undercoat or primer on first and then gloss them they'll be ok but won't withstand any heavy duty hammering. If you want a really professional finish then sand, undercoat, lightly sand again and then coat with gloss. The Trade quality is better (and 3 times the price) than what you get in the likes of B and Q.

tamum · 26/03/2006 22:24

charliecat, that just shows what a nice person you are.

moondog · 26/03/2006 22:25

You are obviously a homemaker extraordinaire Charlie. Thank God I have you on my side.

That's not boring at all - it's really, really interesting.

moondog · 26/03/2006 22:27

Are primer and undercoat the same thing/??

OP posts:
harpsichordcarrier · 26/03/2006 22:28

yes
I agree with SL
fascinating stuff, moondog, keep them coming

Pixiefish · 26/03/2006 22:30

primer and undercoat aren't the same. if they're melamine you need primer, if wood undercoat will do. do they still have the hardware store in town?

moondog · 26/03/2006 22:32

Ah...clear now!
Yes they do. Thanks Pixie.
These Welsh women are multi taskers doncha know.

personally i buy paint from builders merchants rather than the biggies. My decorator much prefers the Trade stuff and I have to admit it is better- gosh that sound posh- my decorator- but it's not, i just find it hard to decorate since having dd although i did decorate most of the house myself with dd on my back in the Ergo lol

moondog · 26/03/2006 22:36

I'm down to good old Stermatt first thing tomorrow.
Will have to lock ds in the garage I think...

OP posts:
Pixiefish · 26/03/2006 23:16

not there moondog- the paint is crappier than crap- it's brolac. i meant the hardware store that was opposite the majestic ( or on the other side of the road)

lafemmequipensequelleestunchap · 26/03/2006 23:31

I have said it before (as someone known on occassion to post about laundry-related matters) we need a domesticity section. Or maybe a really boring question section. I am such a fan of boring questions. It is one of the delights of mn as compared to rl. You can get excited about whatever you like and you can't see your fellow conversers falling to sleep.
