cost of a project

i have just seen a lovely knitting patten that i would love to do ini Prima/november. it used rowan fine tweed 4 ply and was stripey and needed 18 balls of wool. the cost being £63.

i am sure it would be lovely but who can justify paying all that if it turns out to be a rubbish knit and even if it is lovely, i could probably buy something fantastic and save the aggro.

would others knit this?

It would depend how long it would take. If it would last a long time it might be good value. Also, if you were in the market for a new jumper anyway, the actual coat of the craft element of the jumper is the cost of the yarn minus the usual cost of a jumper you might buy. Hence my baby knits in premium yarns seemed just a bit cheaper. Not sure that makes sense outside my head but there you go

I think you also need to deduct something for the enjoyment of knitting it - I certainly don't want to add up the cost of some of the blankets I've made. However, I got a lot of enjoyment out of doing it so some of it can be written off as the cost of a hobby. In my head:o

If you look at it on a purely financial basis, hand making stuff is often much more expensive.

Can the wool can be used for something else if it turns out you don't like the jumper...?

Pennies per hour of pleasure!

It'd take me 4-6 weeks odd knitting for a sweater, so 10-15£ a week for all my hobby time. There aren't many hobbies that are as cheap as that. And, as a bonus you will have a fab sweater that, if you take care, measure, check guage, swatch etc will fit brilliantly and last for ages.

It doesn't work then pull it back and re use.

You may be able to make it in a cheaper yarn too. 4 ply diploma gold is a nice yarn at the budget end. 80% wool and a bit if nylon etc.machine washable too

And sometimes I work out what I'd have spent doing something else instead of knitting-going to the cinema would have been a tenner or so, and also I eat less while knitting so I save on snacks . None of my arguments work on buying wool that goes straight to stash, however. But I'm going to eBay my stash soon...honest

thanks, ISWYM, i did look at the wool and it was lovely but tbh i think it may itch me to death so maybe not.

it is made out of Rowan wool fine tweed which seems to be the top end of the market. i may look at the Patons Dimploma.
