Any ideas on decorating a plain wooden box please?

I have an old pine wooden box - think it was a jewellery box. I would really like to decorate it / personalise it.

does anyone know if it would be simple to put decoupage on it? or just paint it?

i have googled decoupage but it's all a bit confusing. I would like to do something with this box as it did belong to my gran.

Thank you for any ideas!

Try this website for ideas - craftgawker.com
(not linking so you can see it's name)

It's a big collection of links to lots of people's craft ideas/tutorials/blogs etc. You can search it too so can maybe find some ideas that way?

Without having a look on there you could maybe cover it with old newspapers or music scores (you could stain new or photocopies with tea to age them), or use old ordinance survey maps - then you could try to get places which mean things to you.

Cover it with fabric? - just need to cut out carefully and use pva to stick?
(I'm thinking flowery Cath Kidston or liberty type cotton - off cuts on ebay or an old shirt from a charity shop or back of wardrobe)

Mosaic with broken china (might be a bit heavy though) or glue gun on buttons or interesting bottle tops?

I know I'm a bit late to this party but following on from Chocoltae's idea of covering with fabric, you could add a layer of wadding (or fleece fabric would work well) and even quilt it if you wanted.

Note to self, spell check before posting. Sorry Chocolate

Coloured paper cut to size and glued as mosaic is not too heavy, but I think more important is finding use for box.
