local craft/sewing/knitting shop only stocks 100% acrilic stuff. great when i am learning new stuff as it's cheap. but now i want to make nice, lovely soft things for myself (have a couple of scarf, jumpers and cardi patterns lined up). What online shops do you use and what yarns are your favorite? I am looking for DK and Aran thickness wools.

We have a number of stores people have used frequently for the Woolly Hugs projects - and an honourable mention must go to Black Sheep Wools who donated to us very generously recently.

I use McA Direct, Hulu and Deramores.

Fave yarns - I love the Rowan Cashsoft we use in the blanket projects particularly, in Aran weight I like Paton's Cotton Twist.

I try to buy as much as possible from my local yarn shop, it's run by a couple of lovely ladies who gave me great advice when I was learning to knit. I bought some Rowan Cashsoft in there a couple of days ago and it was cheaper than online. if I buy online I go to Deramores, Black Sheep and Dragon Yarns for most things and if I'm looking for hand-dyed I go to Pixie Knits, Luscious Little Somethings and Knittybots. eBay have some yarn sellers too: I bought some Araucania a few weeks ago which arrived the next day and was very reasonable.

I use The Wool Shed in oyne as it's my local-ish one. they're online too. The Drops range is excellent value and they have a range of free patterns online if you google Garn Studio.
