I'm going to the US, what can I take?

BAA says:
Sharp items not allowed in hand luggage - "knives (with blades over 6cm), razor blades, box cutters, scissors (with blades over 6cm from fulcrum)....."

coming back the US website says...
"Items needed to pursue a Needlepoint project are permitted in your carry-on baggage or checked baggage with the exception of circular thread cutters or any cutter with a blade contained inside which cannot go through the checkpoint and must go in your checked baggage."

Going out I can take a cross stitch project can't I and stash it for the homebound journey (night flight anyway)??

Afraid not unless the rules have changed recently - I've asked in the past & was told a very firm NO - always worth double checking with your airline, but its highly unlikely as those things in the wrong hands can be weapons
