I'm trying to knit from a pattern I downloaded from the vogue website but I'm struggling to get past row 5. Agghhhh! It's picot edging and the way I'm doing it I end up with half the number of stitches I started off with.

The instructions are
Picot edging (multiple of 2 stitches)
Row 1 and 3 (RS) - knit
Row 2 and 4 - Purl
Picot row 5 - K1, yo, k2tog: rep from , end k1
Row 6 - purl

So wise mumsnetters, can anyone help me before I throw out my needles and wool in frustration.

YO = yarn over needle. When you do this it creates a hole but also retains the number of stitches so you can then afford to knit two together. Does that help??

No it doesn't retain the number of stitches it creates a stitch and then you can afford to knit two together. That's when you retain the right no of stitches!

Yesssssss!!!

Thank you! Had completely misunderstood the instructions and was doing something v different. Is there any special technique for wrapping the yarn over?

Yarn over explained.

Aha, that explains it, I might actually end up with something that looks like it should. Thank you both.
