Jewellery making question

I'm not really into making things it's true, but I wonder if I may visit your bit of MN for some advice from you crafty experts please?

I would like a nice largish cabochon ring. If I bought a stone or crystal or whatever from Ebay, could I attach it to a ring setting? Where on earth would I get such a setting from? The Ebay seller does sell them, but they seem to be only plated and I'd like silver or maybe gold.

Is this all a bad idea?

I'm only a novice jewellery maker but I imagine you need some know how so as to secure the stone properly. If you want a gold or silver setting, personally I'd probably look to by a complete ring rather than trying to make one myself. If you want something unique, there are quite a few custom jewellery sites you could try.

Sorry to have not been much help - maybe someone else will have an idea
