im looking for a cheap starter machine.
for fixing things and making lightweight curtains and the like...is this any good? or do you have a reccomendation?

Personally I would say NO! - that is unless its for a DC or a perhaps very nervous novice sewer, its unlikely to be able to handle even lightweight curtains without driving you around the bend.

I'd recommend looking for a good solid old reconditioned second hand model such Jones, Frister & Rothman, Pfaff or perhaps even an older Singer, you can pick up these for similar, if not less money & if you buy from a shop, they have been serviced & will come with a guarantee, will do all the basics you need, but wont bounce across the table or fall apart if you try & get any speed up, which I suspect this model will -

my 9 yr old has a similar model, which is fine for small projects, its also painfully slow, which again is fine for her
