Making frills with fishing line......HOW?

I have looked at this which is great

But I have some questions

  1. I am doing a short latin skirt, should I cut a full circle skirt or just put frills on long strips of material?
  2. I need 2 or 3 layers I thought yellow with yellow hem, pink with pink hem with yellow with pink hem on top - does that sound right? (dress on profile)
  3. would you put net underneath?

Sorry to be needy Blush

I've been looking at similar for DDs dancing dresses.

Have a look at - she's a bit talky at the beginning but I found it quite useful.

1 - think it's a circle skirt
2 sounds great
3 no need for net I think as the curls of the fishing line lift the dress.

Katy if you look at it shows it on a circle dress

Thanks

So shall I do the 'hem bit of a full circle skirt just the bottom 6 inches or so?

Not sure I understand the question Katy, this is the kind of thing that is next on my to do list.

So each layer is a full circle skirt (so I am told by other DMs) just each one is longer and then the fishing line sits in the seam allowance.

DMs being dressmakers, rather than my Mum Grin

But each layer is about 6-8 inches long

So assuming DD's waist is about 20 inches (circumference - so 6.5 Diameter) & the skirt 7 inches the hem will only be about 5 feet

But the hem I am attaching the skirt to is about 36 inches (so 11 inches diameter) so the hem will be nearly 7 ft

There is a line drawing on my profile with what I am trying to do & the dress I am working on is the short yellow/pink one (with the chiffon skirt removed)

Nope I still can't get my head round it

Can anyone offer help?

Have a look here to see if this description is any help - it's an American pageant dress but it's using fishing wire.

Also if you go halfway down this page there is a pic of the underneath of the skirt - blue / yellow one. It looks to me as if they are using one long piece of gathered material rather than a circle skirt.

Sorry can't offer any more suggestions, I've not done this yet, just going on the anecdotal info I have gleaned from the other dancing Mammies Grin

Thanks Tory I wasn't being critical of you btw - I really appreciate all your help; I am just confused

Those descriptions are really at odds with each other - one like you say is a gather & the other cut on the bias

I could cut strips like bias binding, gather them and do the fishing line bit?
