I want to make something for my MIL for mother's day. She is 83 & lovely and appreciative. My skills run to crochet, cross stitch and sewing. Any ideas?

I was just about to point you towards crocheted butterflies which someone had posted about recently, but that was you - doh! They are lovely by the way, one of these days I might have the time to make some....

Depends how active she is really. I started off thinking phone or camera pouches but if she doesn't have those or doesn't get out and about much that won't be of interest.

How about a nice shopping bag? Or sew something very simple and cross stitch a motif to put on the side. I am in danger of thinking only in stereotypes but how about a tea cosy or a mug cosy? That would be pretty quick as I know time can't be on your side.

Or how about a pretty, little scarf of some sort. Something decorative rather than something chunky for the colder months.

Something like this. I would make it shorter so that it just crosses over at the front and it could be worn with a nice brooch or just tucked inside a coat. Depends how quickly you can work though - I am sure a lady of your capapbilities could make your own pattern up! Smile

Can you make the butterflies with a long tail for a bookmark, like this?

I'm making one for my MIL, but for my mum, I'm making this scarf

ps. are you on Pinterest? I have a mahoosive collection of free crochet patterns on my boards Smile

Hello all

Sorry I missed these replies! Some great ideas, but I settled on doing a sort of garland with flowers and circles that she can hang in her garden. Not sure how it is going to turn out, but will keep you posted!

I put this up on blog last Sunday... it's a garden tote but can be used to carry other items, took me a couple of hours... but they I was taking pics and trying to work out how to put it together! :)
