Baby quilt and buttons

I am making a cot/baby quilt 42in x 42in. I was thinking of sewing shirt buttons round the edge, about 2in in from the edge. Do you think it would be a bit unsafe if the baby was using it as a playmat etc? Or am I being overly cautious?

I wouldn't sew buttons on a baby quilt, no.

Could you not do some embroidery or french knots instead?
If you were to go with buttons try and make them big ones rather than small and both sew and glue them on.

I've done a bit of a boring quilting pattern but wanted something quick to liven it ip. Have done bulk of the quilting so thought of something round the edge.
Have had rick rack suggested to me. Not sure how to go round corners with it though.

Silky ribbon is usually popular with babies. Could you put little loops of it all round like now of those taggy blankets? Probably too complicated and fussy on something that size though.
