Crochet question - yarn related

aJumpedUpPantryBoy · 29/02/2012 21:52

I know there are lots of experienced crocheters on here so I wonder if someone can help.

Whenever I've made anything in the past I have always used one type of yarn per project.

I'm about to start a blanket - I was planning on using Sublime Baby Cashmere merino silk DK (it's 75% extra fine merino 20% silk and 5% cashmere) I've been buying a couple of balls a week.

I want to include a colour they don't have but it is available in Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK (55% Merino Wool, 33% Microfibre 12% Cashmere)

Will it be a diaster if I use a combination of the two yarns?

No probably not. You need to check the stitchs per inch or 4 inches (labels vary on what they use). If they are both DK it is likely to be the same but it is worth checking.

The only problem I would see is how to care for the blanket. Are the care instructions for these yarns very different? Even so, as long as you stick to the most gentle wash you should be OK, i.e. if one can washed on an ordinary wash at 40 deg and the other is handwash, always wash the blanket as handwash.

The Debbie Bliss DK will be thicker than the Sublime "Baby" yarn. baby" versions are generally thinner (according to the MN blanket threads :))

You need to have the same fibre mix to ensure it washes and wears the same all over.

Sublime baby Cashmere merino is the same as normal Sublime baby cashmere merino - just in different colour ways. I have tons of the stuff Grin It does feel quite different in texture etc to Debbie Bliss IMO though, I wouldn't be keen to mix them. Bit more rope like texture to the sublime, and bit of a sheen.

Black Sheep have been having quite a lot of Sublime on offer for quite a while now in the sale section, that's why I have got tons of it.

"Sublime baby Cashmere merino is the same as normal Sublime baby cashmere merino "

That's because they are the same thing barring a capital letter :o

SwivellingDicksTidyWife · 01/03/2012 10:26

OOPs
You know what I mean Grin I have loads of both because I am a sucker for a special offer. It is lovely to knit with.

SoupDragon · 01/03/2012 11:13

My shopping basket at Blacksheep now has 4 different colours of the cashmerino aran in it Hmm (Clover, lovage, bay and fennel). In my mind I can see a blanket and it is snuggly and gorgeous...

SwivellingDicksTidyWife · 01/03/2012 11:22

I have the DK and have Fleur, Periwinkle, Smooch and Buff Blush It is really nice though. They sell off the last years colours but replace them with almost identical ones.

It is all part of my new knitting strategy to try to buy posh/nice wool on offer, rather than cheaper wool.

To be fair, my strategy needs to be do not buy any more bloody wool at all even if it is rowan at 10pence a ball because you have a stash problem

SoupDragon · 01/03/2012 11:33

That's my problem - I have a blanket's worth of the baby cotton kapok because it was a bargain. I started my blanket days before the sad news about Wubby and then MrsK.

I really really shouldn't buy it...

SoupDragon · 01/03/2012 11:34

What size crocheted blanket would 10 balls of each make do you think? Just out of interest you understand...

SwivellingDicksTidyWife · 01/03/2012 11:38

Try adding up the yardage and seeing what Ravelry can suggest? I still haven't mastered crochet is an understatement

SwivellingDicksTidyWife · 01/03/2012 11:43

this?

SwivellingDicksTidyWife · 01/03/2012 11:46

this?

SwivellingDicksTidyWife · 01/03/2012 11:48

OP - what colour did you want to add?

SoupDragon · 01/03/2012 12:08

My brain hurts but I suspect the answer to my question is "big enough"

I also want to know what colours the OP is using/after :)

SwivellingDicksTidyWife · 01/03/2012 12:14

We were lured in by the thread title mentioning Yarn. I was, anyway. Off to work on my blanket squares now.

aJumpedUpPantryBoy · 01/03/2012 17:56

Thank you all - I knew I'd lure you in with the word yarn.

I went to the wool shop after work and you were right, the DB feels completely different. I bought a couple more balls of the Sublime Baby Cashmere and some of the normal cashmere.
The lady working there said that she had used the sublime extra fine merino in a blanket with the cashmere and it washed well so I had a ball of that as well.
I've bought some plum colurs,a red and some green.

I'm on the BlackSheep site now!

I'm making a Flowers in the Snow Blanket.
I've just made one for a friend and I fell in love with it (there's a picture on my blog here if you'd like to have a look, so I've decded I want one for myself.

The one I made was in Stylecraft acrylic and it looks fine but I wanted to make this one from natural fibres.

Wow that blanket is stunning. Really proves crochet doesn't have to look grannyish, it's beautiful.

aJumpedUpPantryBoy · 01/03/2012 23:31

Thank you Blush
It's the first thinh I've made that I have loved (as opposed to being pleased with) so giving it away was a bit of a wrench.
However, I've had a lovely message from the recipient saying that she loves it too.

SoupDragon · 02/03/2012 07:15

It's lovely :)

I now what you mean - I made a baby blanket as a gift and it was gorgeous. I wanted to keep it despite it being pink - a colour I hate!

SoupDragon · 03/03/2012 10:45

FGS - that yarn I ordered because of this thread has arrived.

It is absolutely gorgeous [sigh] and hidden safely in my wardrobe, right at the back...

aJumpedUpPantryBoy · 03/03/2012 19:48

Sorry SoupDragon Grin

Mine arrived too - thank you to the poster who recommended BlackSheep.

I had two woolly parcels arrive today - one was yarn for MrsKazii's blanket. DH brought them upstairs saying 'Mmmm, I can't imagine what these are...'
