Sharpies instead of fabric pens

A quickie - I saw someone suggest recently that sharpies were as good as fabric pens, but I lost the thread..

Would anyone be able to tell me how well sharpies last on fabric after a wash? (of course I could just hand DS a sharpie and let him do a test run on his clothes )

I use sharpies to name the children's school clothes. It does not wash off (at least not before they have outgrown the clothes) so I would say they would work well!!
