help me make a hat for DD

I am the mum that staples instead of sewing and I now find that I have to make DD (aged 5) a hat for her school christmas party. I had hoped to staple/tack a few decorations on an existing santa hat but no, she wants a purple hat.

So, I have bought some fabric, some trim and some bits to sew on and have plans to make/help DD make a pom pom to put on the end. I had in mind a santa style hat but don't really know where to start. I was going to use the existing hat as a template and cut out that shape and tack together but haven't really thought about how it will work properly, ie how to do the headband bit.

Any suggestions for a beginner?

try here if you've not already worked things out...

Have fun :)

bebemoojem thank you so much for that. I hadn't already worked things out, I tend to leave things til the last minute/thrive under pressure? Wink
That is really helpful. Have my pompom sorted (hopefully!) - assuming it doesn't all fall apart when we/DD cuts it. Am a bit worried that the fabric DD chose is a bit light for the hat so am thinking of maybe attempting to cover her existing santa hat. Watch this space.......................

i have a pattern for an elf hat made from an old pair of leggings and some felt, could easily use purple leggings.

Thanks ladies.
It is going well I think. Finally got round to takling it on Wednesday morning. Cut out the shape on greaseproof paper, pinned to material, cut (allowing for a seam!) with the crapiest scissors in the world, must buy some proper ones for future attempts. Tacked it together, wished I had found my mum's old sewing machine when she died, sewed as neatly as possible down the seams and it looks ok. Sewed on some pretty sequiney (sp?) that DD chose around the seam between the pretty purple material that she HAD TO HAVE and the white edge and it actually suprisingly looks like a hat. Just need to sew some purple buttons (her choice, not mine!) around the white trim and finish pom pom and sew on.

I have to say, I felt very very pleased with myself on Wednesday evening. Until, DD1 who is at boarding school texted and asked if she could give me a dress and measurements for me to take in for this weekend! Shock She has to be joking, surely taking in a dress is not a task for a novice like me!

will post a photo of finished hat Xmas Grin
