Recovering upholstered dining chairs with striped fabric - which way should stripes go?

I'm thinking front to back but the existing fabric has a vague stripe in the pattern and that is side to side. Is there a 'right' way?

I don't know if there's a "right" way, but all the stripy chairs I've ever seen have been striped front to back if that helps? It shouldn't make any difference to wear of the fabric either way, iykwim

my chair is front to back

Thanks. Yes, googling seems that front to back is the right way. I've done two chairs now! :o

I would've said front to back too. I painted an reupholstered some eBay bargain chairs recently, they look bloody great. Satisfying, is it? Grin

I'd say front to back. If the arms are upholstered (eg on an armchair), you'd have more difficulty matching up the pattern side to side than front to back.

My dad is an upholsterer and he says front to back.

Thanks all - I have done the 1st two chairs front to back and they look pretty good (well as good as I, who is not a professional upholsterer, can make them look)

I am going to give them another go with Scotchguard tomorrow to try and childproof the fabric a bit more!
