Can I knit a 60cm project on 80cm circular needles?

Hi - have never tried knitting on circular nedles before and about to start my first project. It's a chunky knit snood using circular needles. However..I have ordered 80cm long needles and the pattern calls for 60cm. I'm on a really tight budget so can't afford to spend money on returning them and getting more posted out and haven't seen ones the size I need (9mm x 60cm) on the usual sites I use. Is there any way I can still use them or do I need to go back to the drawing board?

I prefer the magic loop technique, it's on youtube, it means you can use shorter lengths. I usually use 2 30cm circulars and space stitches evenly.

On the laptop now, www.knittinghelp.com/videos/advanced-techniques this will take you to the advanced knitting techiniques. Both methods I use are listed, magic loop and knitting on two circulars.

My only worry, and it's caused me probs in the past it that 60cm work may not fit on your 80cm needles. You could get off by buying a shorter circular and knit on the two needles, spreading the load.

Oh - thanks. Looks pretty confusing but guess it'll make sense when I actually start?! Stupidly hadn't occured to me that the length of the needles would need to be the same or smaller than the work. Chuffing baby brain Blush

is your pattern tweakable. Is it plain knit or is it patterned, as you could increase the pattern until you get an 80cm tube.

you might find that as the needles are too long the work gets stretched and will be too big - this happened to me recently when knitting a hat, it's hard to move the stitches round the needles.

You can get circular needles for about £3 on ebay if you type in circular knitting needles, in different lengths. Try these.

The pattern is just moss stitch and I am a really tight knitter so I may be as well increasing to an 80cm tube. Thanks for the ebay link but they don't have the size I need - will keep it in mind for other projects though!
