Knitting help please! Equivalent to Debbie Bliss Fez

Can anyone advise what kind of wool is equivalent to Debbie Bliss Fez - I have a book of hers with hat patterns but my mum is horrified at the idea of buying wool for hats - she says I have to use remnants (she has lots and it makes sense). I'm not sure what kind of wool this is though - double knitting?

An enthusiastic but not-very-knowledgeable knitter.

By the look of it (checking the tension) it knits the same as aran weight yarn on 5mm needles. Does this help?

BTW I love knitting hats and always buy fresh wool for them.

I agree with Angel but I disagree with your mum! This is not hideously expensive wool and part of the joy of knitting is using the right stuff for the right pattern... at the most this will be a couple of balls so go for it, you deserve it!

That is a fair point and as I told my mum, the speed I knit at, the price of the wool hardly matters!
That is really helpful to know it knits at same as aran on 5mm - thanks very much for replying.

I have sucessfully substituted Debbie Bliss yarn on a couple of children's patterns as they would have cost me around 40 quid a jumper otherwise and it worked fine, think as long as you have some wool content in yarn it will be fine

Debbie Bliss Fez is an Aran weight wool (also called Worstead weight) so you could substitue any other Aran/Worstead wool and the pattern will work fine. However it will look subtly different as I doubt you'll find a substitute wool that has the same Merino/Camel hair mix.

Comments on this yarn on Ravelry are very complimentary about the stitch definition and warmth although do note that there is a slight aroma of camel! It also felts so is not a washable yarn.

Fez is the most fantastic yarn and as you probably only need a ball or two for a hat is it really worth making it out of 'leftover' yarn? Treat yourself - splash out on Fez and you will end up with something gorgeous! From what I remember it's only a fiver a ball, or thereabouts.

If your mum wants a nice project to use up leftover wool, this is a gorgeous scarf:

I just used some Fez to knit a hat for DH, gloves for DH and gloves for DS (3) and this took 2 balls in total which cost me £4.40 each.

It is a lovely wool and perfect for hats, I knitted it on 5mm. Hope this helps!
