Do you find it hard to throw all wine and liquor bottles away? Some of them are so elegant. Do you find a use for them?

I've put aside a lovely vodka bottle. I'd like to cut the top off and smooth the edge to make a vase. Not sure how to do it - wondering how much a local glazier might charge. So watching with interest.

There are websites telling you how to do this.

This way seems quite popular on Pinterest.

Yay, thanks for that BestLaidPlans.

I don't understand the bit about rotating the bottle so all bits warm evenly - how does turning it round achieve that?

I am so going to try it though :o

overmydeadbody · 14/12/2011 20:32

I keep wanting to do this. I have a dremel and everything and am sure I could make a nice vase out of an old Bombay Sapphire bottle.

overmydeadbody · 14/12/2011 20:34

Soupy the flame will travel up, so rotating the bottle will mean all parts of the bottle get a turn to have the flame over them.

overmydeadbody · 14/12/2011 20:34

Wow. I don't even need a dremel to do that. I am going to try it and report back...

SoupDragon · 14/12/2011 20:37

Now, all I need is an empty bottle... hmmm... I guess it's not a good idea to try this after emptying the pretty bottle?

overmydeadbody · 14/12/2011 20:48

lol possibly not. Can you not raid the recycling box for a glass bottle to experiment on? Get DP to drink a beer? Something like that?

SoupDragon · 14/12/2011 21:09

The recycling went this morning dammit. :o

overmydeadbody · 14/12/2011 21:11

I'm off to try it Grin

It doesn't work Soupy!

It burnt a lovely blue flame, I kept turning it, and when the flame went out I plunged it into cold water and nothing. Just a wet wine bottle.

Grrrrr.

overmydeadbody · 14/12/2011 21:32

Maybe it's coz I used an expensive wine bottle? Maybe I should use a cheap one?

overmydeadbody · 14/12/2011 21:34

Ok, my DP recons that method will never work and the video is just s trick. I'm gonna have to use the dremmel.

SoupDragon · 15/12/2011 08:01

Hmmm.... I must say can't see how it could work because I can't see how it would burn hot enough,

overmydeadbody · 15/12/2011 08:08

Exactly, it can't get hot enough. It's like running a lighter flame around the bottle. You'd need a blow torch or something.

I am going to try cutting it with a dremel at the weekend.

SoupDragon · 15/12/2011 08:20

Perhaps you need to soak the sting and then tie it tightly round the bottle. Not tie it, then soak it and put it on. [ponders]

Try this vid on YouTube. I can't wait to have a go.
