knitting for british troops

hey, my brother is in the british army, which got me thinking about ways to contribute to help troops out in afghan. He isn't deployed as yet but I know how he felt last time he was and really appreciated stuff being sent out.

Also wondered about knitting stump socks for amputee's as have found a pattern for it online, this isn't for the military so not sure if they really need them...

just any thoughts really if you are involved in anything I can join ?

I thought this was going to be a follow on the that um specialist mitt thread Blush

I don't know the answer to the main question - but would be interested in finding out. Might your serving brother know what would be appreciated?

Yeah I spoke to him but he wants a really ridiculous bobby hat with a massive bobble and i'm sure they donn't like them to have anything that makes them stand out too much !

If I find out anymore information I'll start a thread to see if anyone wants to contribute

You could try getting in touch with BLESMA to see if there's any demand for stump socks and, if so, where to send them.

Help for Heroes or SSAAFA might also be useful to back up BLESMA.

Help for Heroes raise money for the big capital projects - they don't do any individual welfare work.

SSAFA does, as does RBL.

Well I think that from reading stuff online handknitted stump socks wouldn't be used as they wouldn't be tight enough, so maybe it would be needed by people overseas without a prosthetic leg, I think I will put on hold that idea for now.

So, I spoke to my brother and I think I will wait for him to get back from Canada to discuss properly about it and find out which regiments are out there, who he knows and contact them about exactly what they need. Then they won't be disapointed by the packages that are sent, so he gets back mid November and it still gives some time before its totally freezing in Afghan and they will really want hats.

So I also have another project that I though could be done for Christmas so I will start a new thread for that, its crocheting and knitting toys for the women's aid refuge near me in York.
